 RARE EARLY HOLLIE POINT BABY's CHRISTENING BONNET 1750/1800 MINT CONDITION C. 1750 - 1800's Hollie Point baby's fine linen/lawn Christening bonnet entirely hand assembled and hand sewn. This most lovely bonnet is beautifully decorated all over with panels of hand worked 'sprig' decoration these panels being decorated at either side with dainty drawnthread work. Neat hand sewn tiny buttonhole stitches have been worked from one side to the other in the middle of this bonnet to form the delightful 'hollie point' floral pattern, this continuous strip starting from the middle back neck edge of the bonnet, continuing up over the back and along the top of the bonnet to the front face edge. To the back of the cap and at either side of the 'hollie point' panel there is an embellishment of zig zag feather work along with decorative french knots. This decoration continues up and over the top of the bonnet right to the face edge, decorating either side of the 'hollie point' panel. The hollie point panel itself measures 3 /4" wide and 9 1/4" long approximately. Adjustable linen ties to the top of the bonnet and at the middle nape edge can be adjusted to fit baby's head if smaller size is required. Hollie Point is recorded in the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries, but most of the examples are from the second half of the Eighteenth century towards the early Nineteenth century. A most remarkable pristine bonnet which has survived in MINT condition. Having been gently washed, this lovely item is free of all stains and damage, is lovely and white and therefore ready for use. A most remarkable piece of history, extremely wearable and for that collector in absolute pristine condition.
